Dragons RFC acquired by consortium of investors in return to private ownership

New owners have been announced for Dragons RFC, following negotiations with the Welsh Rugby Union. Capital Law advised the consortium of investors on the acquisition of the Gwent region, which included former Pontypool and Newbridge scrum-half and ex-HRA Pharma CEO, David Wright, current Dragons RFC Chairman and former JustEat chief executive, David Buttress as well as a high profile investor from overseas.

The deal allows the club to pursue a long-term strategy and take back ownership of their Rodney Parade home, where they are aiming to upgrade the site.

The team at Capital was led by Jordan Thomas with Corporate support from Catherine James and Alex Prothero, and assistance from Real Estate experts Hannah Vosper and Angharad Jones.

Dragons RFC Chairman, David Buttress, commented:

As a consortium, this is the culmination of a number of years of hard work and negotiation and we are really pleased to complete the deal. We are grateful for the hard work and diligence of the Capital Law team and look forward to building the club over the coming years.

Jordan Thomas, Corporate & Private Equity Principal Associate at Capital Law, said:

The return to private ownership is a huge positive, not only for the Dragons, but also for Welsh rugby as a whole, providing a form of parity across the four Welsh regions. We are thrilled to have played a role in the acquisition, and look forward to seeing the club build on their plans over the next few years.
