New promotions at Capital Law

Leading commercial law firm, Capital Law, has promoted seven lawyers this May – including a partner, two senior associates, and four associates.

Chris Coughlan, who joined Capital Law in 2019, has been promoted to partner. Chris is a commercial lawyer with over 11 years of experience specialising in the technology sector. As well as advising clients on a wide range of tech-related legal issues, Chris is passionate about promoting technology in the law. He is a committee member of the South West Group of the Society for Computers and Law, a member of the Cyber Resilience Centre for Wales advisory group, and heads up Capital’s  cross departmental technology sector. Chris is also admitted as a solicitor with the Law Society of Ireland, and leads Capital’s Irish desk.

The new senior associates, Sam O’Callaghan and Melanie Williams, work in the firm’s real estate and corporate teams respectively. Sam, who specialises in complex construction disputes, first joined Capital as a paralegal before training with us and qualifying in April 2019. This is the third time he is promoted in just three years. Melanie, who joined Capital in 2018 as a solicitor, specialises in acquisitions, disposals and private equity. She also advises clients on commercial agreements and insolvency.

New associates are Charlotte Hanson from the firm’s financial services team, Louise Jones from its employment and immigration team, and Simon Williams and James Williams, both from its commercial disputes team. James, who had worked at Capital as a paralegal since 2018, got promoted to associate immediately after he qualified as a Chartered Legal executive in March 2022.

These promotions take the total number of partners to 23, that of senior associates to 19, and that of associates to 23 – just as Capital reaches 190 employees.

Elin Pinnell, Managing Partner at Capital Law, said:

At Capital, we say that to do the best work we need the best people. While we continue our recruitment push to meet the demand of our growing client list, our priority remains to develop and reward the people who already work with us. Chris, Sam, Melanie, Charlotte, Louise, Simon and James thoroughly deserve their promotion – having exceeded both their clients’ and colleagues’ expectations. Congratulations all!
