Love Your Lungs Week: breathe safe, work safe (29 June–5 July)

Mark Littlejohns

Work-related lung disease is one of the most serious but preventable health risks in the workplace.

Many workers are exposed to harmful dusts, fumes and vapours without always realising the long-term damage this can cause.

Higher-Risk Jobs & Substances:

  • Construction, demolition and stonework (silica dust)
  • Welding and metal fabrication (welding fumes)
  • Woodworking and carpentry (wood dust)
  • Agriculture and farming (grain and organic dusts)
  • Vehicle repair and transport (diesel fumes)
  • Cleaning and manufacturing (chemical vapours)

How to Protect Your Lungs:

  • Follow risk assessments and safe systems of work
  • Use ventilation, extraction and dust controls provided
  • Wear the correct RPE when required
  • Report faulty equipment or poor air quality
  • Seek advice early if you develop breathing problems
  • Protect your lungs today — the damage you can’t see can last a lifetime.

Good lung health depends on early action, safe working practices and the right control measures being consistently used. Everyone has a role in reducing exposure and speaking up about unsafe conditions.

Protecting your lungs today helps prevent irreversible damage in the future and supports a healthier, safer workplace for all.
