New Biodiversity Laws Bring Additional Costs for Property Developers in England

The UK is one of the most nature depleted countries in the world. Lawmakers are now seeking to reverse this trend by targeting property developers.

New laws aimed at improving nature (biodiversity) in England have just come into effect for housebuilders and commercial property developers. These new Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) laws are mandatory and require the amount of biodiversity at development sites to be increased by 10% for development to go ahead in England. If this target cannot be met at the development site itself, the developer can improve biodiversity at other sites in England or buy biodiversity credits, but these are expensive.

It is important for property developers of sites in England to find ways to comply with the new obligations without undermining the financial viability of their schemes.

Aimed at property developers, housebuilders, and major landowners, our recent webinar with Head of Environmental, Climate and Sustainability Law, Stephen Sykes & Planning Solicitor, Tom Jones answers your questions about BNG in England and takes you through how the position differs in Wales.

What we cover in the webinar

  • BNG: what it is and why it’s now a mandatory requirement
  • What this means to you and your developments
  • Timescales for BNG implementation
  • How to develop your BNG Plan
