Screen Smart: prevent headaches at work with simple habits to reduce eye strain, tension and fatigue

Mark Littlejohns

Headaches are one of the most common workplace health complaints.

Although often considered minor, frequent headaches can reduce concentration, productivity and overall wellbeing. They may also be a sign of fatigue, dehydration, stress or too much screen time.

Long periods of focused work, especially at a computer, can cause eye strain, muscle tension and mental fatigue. Extended screen use may lead to dry eyes and visual strain, while poor posture and prolonged sitting can create tension in the neck and shoulders, increasing discomfort and triggering headaches.

To reduce the risk:

  • Take short screen breaks regularly (a few minutes each hour).
  • Use the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  • Change position and stretch your neck, shoulders and back.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Set up your workstation correctly – screen at eye level, chair adjusted, and reduce screen glare and adjust brightness/contrast to suit the room. Request a DSE assessment if discomfort continues.
  • If working over 6 hours, you’re entitled to a 20-minute uninterrupted rest break. Make sure that you take it!
  • Managers should promote a positive break culture to maintain focus and reduce errors.
  • Report persistent or severe headaches to your manager or Occupational Health.
  • Seek medical advice if headaches are sudden, severe, recurring, or linked with vision changes, dizziness or nausea
