Empowering HR professionals and line managers with practical legal knowledge

The Capital Law Diploma empowers HR professionals and line managers with practical legal knowledge on all Employment Law issues, writes Richard Thomas, who teaches the course.

If you are an HR professional or have line management responsibilities, you’ll almost certainly need a good working knowledge of employment law. This is increasingly important given the steep rise in Employment Tribunal claims over the last few years. The Capital Law Diploma’s aim is simple: to deliver practical knowledge that is easy to apply in your job. It’s not a deep dive into the esoteric depths of employment law; it’s designed to address the real issues you are likely to face in your role, and to give you the tools you need to handle them effectively.

The Capital Law Diploma is a professional development programme of study that provides pragmatic advice for the workplace. It covers all day to day employment issues including recruitment, absence, discipline, performance and business change. It is taught by employment lawyers with significant practical experience of dealing with these issues and dealing with claims in the Employment Tribunal. The course is run in conjunction with Cardiff Law School at Cardiff University who set and mark the assessments. On successful completion of the course delegates will receive a certificate from The Centre for Professional Legal Studies.

The Course packs a lot of knowledge into a relatively short period of time with six “contact day” sessions taking place over a six-month period.  Just as importantly, you’ll leave with a 150-page booklet and other resources you can refer to whenever you need them.

The course is designed to be lively and interesting, with a variety of activities in each session. For example, we’ll explore real cases we’ve dealt with over the years, give practical tips on the different aspects of employee relations, and lead discussions on how you and your peers feel you should approach various situations.

Comparing ideas and approaches with other people on the course is especially useful. Those who have taken the course tell us that they gained a lot from the opportunity to network and compare notes with others facing similar issues. They also tell us that they left the course feeling much better prepared for situations such as disciplinaries, employment tribunals and the other legal issues they may encounter during their careers. We’re always pleased to see them heading back to their workplaces feeling better equipped, many of them having also made lasting connections that are beneficial to their careers.
