SOL expanded to include a range of skilled occupations

Angharad Aspinall comments on the recent announcement that the shortage of occupation list has been expanded to include a range of skilled occupations.

The Government has now added more roles to the shortage occupation list (SOL), following changes to the Immigration Rules.

The SOL is a list of job roles which suffer a shortage of skilled people to fill the positions in the UK. If an employer wants to fill a position which is listed on the SOL, then it is exempt from some of the features required by UK Visas and Immigration when recruiting from outside the European Economic Area. These exemptions include being exempt from the minimum skill level (usually degree level education/experience and above).

The additions to the SOL include web designers. With London named as the Tech capital of the world this comes as no surprise and if the current trend of tech businesses choosing to start up and stay in London continues, we expect to see other similar tech jobs added to the list in future.
